The Portuguese occupied Diu for almost 430 years from 1535, and were only forced to leave in 1961, 14 years after India gained independence. Apparently the Sultan at the time allowed the Portuguese to build the impressive Diu Fort (above) as part of a defense allegiance against a common enemy. But then, wouldn’t you know, the Portuguese decided not to give it back and to capture the rest of the island as well.
